The University of Ottawa Toastmasters Club will be offering a 7 week introductory course in presentations.

The purpose of the Grammarian is to note words and sounds used as a "crutch" or "pause filler" by anyone who speaks during the meeting. Words may be inappropriate interjections such as "and", "well", "but", "so", "you know". Sounds may be "ah", "um", "er". You should also note when a speaker repeats a word or phrase such as "I, I" or "This means, this means".

In addition, the Grammarian track the proper, and improper use of the english language.

Prior to the meeting

  • Prepare a brief explanation of the duties of the grammarian for the benefit of guests.

Upon arrival at the meeting

  • Make a list of everyone present. If there will be prepared speaches talk to the speakers to see if there is any particular word or phrase they would also like counted.

During the meeting

  • When introduced by the Toastmaster prior the the Table Topics, explain the grammarian's role.
  • Throughout the meeting, listen to everyone for "crutch" sounds and long pauses used as fillers and not as a necessary part of sentence structure. Write down how many crutch sounds or words each person used during all portions of the meeting. If the member speaking desires you may ring a bell or wine glass to make them aware.
  • Throughout the meeting, listen to everyone for proper and improper use of the english language. Write them down (and not who said it)
  • When called on by the general evaluator during the evaluation segment, stand by your chair and give your report.
